Half Wat Point Update

The Woman’s 2XI have had a hugely successful first half of the season.

The season started with some new members entering the team. Throughout the season it is clear that we have bonded as a team (both on and off the pitch) and gotten familiar with each other’s style of play, allowing us to play together as a team, rather than as individuals. This team play has been one of the key aspects that have contributed to our success.

There have been some obstacles that have had to be overcome. There were a large number of injuries that the team suffered making consistency and numbers difficult. Despite this, we always managed to produce a team for games and adapted to the circumstances.

Attendance at training has been solid; there is always a good turn out from the 2’s and there is always a good work rate put in by the girls. The fitness outside of training is also good from the team, there are many sweaty selfies being posted and there is commitment to improving and maintaining out fitness.

Our performance in our BUCS league has been slightly disappointing. We are in a tough league with teams who are in National 2, such as Aberdeen 1XI. There is always a good performance put in by the team. We have had good wins against RGU and exciting draws with Edinburgh. However, we struggle with teams such as Aberdeen and St Andrews. Although we always try our hardest and play a good game, unfortunately we are yet to come away with a win. This means we are sitting in the bottom half of the BUCS league.

In contrast, we finished the first half of the season top of West 1 as an unbeaten team and with two games in hand. This is a massive success and is a reward for the hard work that the girls have put into hockey. The team only got promoted to West 1 last season and so this proves that we deserve our place in this league, if not the league above!

The team hope to continue our success in the West 1 league and to win more BUCS game in the second half of the season.

Monarchs Away

The twos headed of nice and early to Dundee to play Monarchs. Many of the girls hadn't played together before but knowing we had a strong team we were confident from the start. This demonstrated as after a couple of minutes and a good set of play Naomi Hunter found the back board. And then again a couple of minutes later. Glasgow continued to make some good attacks and by half time we were 3-0 up. We started the second half strong yet struggled to find the back board and we lost our intensity, yet this wasn't for long as we soon found ourselves with two more great goals from Mary McDonald and Judith McConaghy. Nearing the end of the match we were awarded a short corner and after having many short corners before and failing to capitalise on them we hoped for success. This was found by a great strike from top D by no other than our captain Charlotte Laing. Glasgow played hard right to the end resulting in a 6-0 win. And are now very excited to progress to the next round of the Scottish cup.
